Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp has announced a three-year deal with Facebook, just weeks after Australia passed a law requiring tech platforms to pay for news content. The deal is to cover News Corp’s entire content in Australia, with publications like The Australian and Melbourne’s Herald Sun disseminating content through the ‘news’ service by Facebook.

Robert Thomson, chief executive of News Corp believes the deal will lead to a positive impact in Australia.

“Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch led a global debate while others in our industry were silent or supine as digital dysfunctionality threatened to turn journalism into a mendicant order,” he said.

“The agreement with Facebook is a landmark in transforming the terms of trade for journalism, and will have a material and meaningful impact on our Australian news businesses,” he added.
