Karachi: The broiler chicken prices have jumped to Rs 500/kg in Karachi and people on social media rejecting the recent prices of chicken are asking each other to boycott it until stabilisation of its price.

“Most of the poultry farms belonged to political leaders like sugarcane, sugar industry in Sindh and Punjab and mostly Punjab’s poultry farms owners set rates of eggs and live chicken throughout the country,” said Wahid Ahmed, Karachi’s one of the biggest supplier of chicken.

He said that because of the cold weather in February this year, live chicken production is lower than expected while its demand is high owing to on-going wedding seasons in Karachi. Punjab’s poultry farm owners hold their poultry stocks while withholding their products in Karachi, as the demand for chicken is also high in major cities of Punjab, he claimed.

The retailers are also getting benefits from the chicken shortage. The live chicken rates are fixed around Rs 250-270/kg, but retailers are selling chicken meat at Rs 500/kg. The administration is not taking action against them.
Many doctors have also claimed that broiler chicken contains unhealthy fats which are not good for a healthy person. They also claim that broiler chicken is unhygienic food, as it grows in 6 weeks instead of its natural growth of 6 months. Regular consumption of broiler chicken can cause problems like obesity, high blood pressure, and heart problems etc.

Different groups on social media are trying to convince customers to stop consuming broiler chickens and opt for healthy country chicken meat instead.
