Ruth and Judea Pearl, the parents of slain American journalist Daniel Pearl, have expressed disappointment at the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan’s order today to release Omar Sheikh, the primary accused in the Pearl kidnapping and murder case.

In a joint statement today, Daniel Pearl’s parents said: “Today’s decision is a complete travesty of justice and the release of these killers puts in danger journalists everywhere and the people of Pakistan. We urge the US government to take all necessary actions under the law to correct this injustice.”

“We also hope that the Pakistani authorities will take all necessary steps to rectify this travesty of justice. No amount of injustice will defeat our resolve to fight for justice for Daniel Pearl,” they said.

In a statement in December 2020, Pearl’s parents had stated they were hopeful of positive proceedings in the case.

“We refuse to believe that the Pakistani government and the Pakistani people will let such a travesty of justice tarnish the image and legacy of Pakistan,” Judea Pearl had said.
