Covid in KPK has claimed twenty-one deaths and 334 new infections on Saturday as the positivity rate in the province declined to 5.9 percent for the first time during the last month.

The health department on Saturday reported that the province had so far recorded 5,395 deaths due to Covid and 171,072 cases adding that 92 percent of the recorded cases (158,513) had recovered from the infection.

The report said the active cases in the province amounted to 7,164 and they’re mostly reported in Peshawar, Mardan, Nowshera, Kohat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, and Swabi districts.

According to it, Peshawar recorded eight of the fresh deaths from the virus, Bannu four, Dera Ismail Khan and Swat two each and Kohat, Hangu, Lower and Upper Chitral and Mardan districts one each.

Ten and nine new Covid-19 cases were reported in Dera Ismail Khan and Swat, respectively. The bed occupancy rate in Swat is 39 percent, said the health department in the report.

According to the report, the highest coronavirus positivity rate of 8.4 percent in the province was reported in Mardan, the second most populous district after Peshawar. The hospitals’ 40 percent beds for coronavirus patients are occupied in the district.

The positivity rate in Swabi was 5.4 percent with 66 percent bed occupancy (which is the highest bed occupation percentage in the province). In Nowshera, the rate was 6.1 percent and 46 percent of beds were occupied.

Officials insisted that the vaccination rates were low and therefore, the low positivity rate was unsustainable.
