The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved the resumption of the import of cotton from India till June 30, 2021. This decision of ECC will be rectified by the Federal Cabinet which meets tomorrow.

Furthermore, approval for sugar imports is also expected soon. Pakistan can import up to 5 lac tonnes of sugar from India.

This development comes in after meaningful exchanges between the two countries in the past few weeks.

In August 2019, after India’s decision to revoke Article 370 in Kashmir, the government of Pakistan downgraded trade relations with the country. At present, sugar, yarn and cotton can be imported from any country except for India.

In May 2020, due to COVID-19 pandemic, Pakistan lifted ban on the import on the medicines and raw materials from India.
