United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi, met Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa at GHQ on Thursday.
Matters regarding regional security, mutual interests, the Afghanistan issue, and participation in the humanitarian assistance of the region were discussed, according to ISPR.
COAS reiterated the need for convergence of global efforts to stop the humanitarian and refugee crisis in Afghanistan.
COAS also lauded the role of UNHCR in promoting UN core values and their response during the crises.
The visiting UNHCR lauded the efforts of Pakistan hosting four million refugees from Afghanistan in the last four decades.
He also acknowledged Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan’s stability and humanitarian work and the visiting dignitary pledged to play the future role in Afghanistan with further improvement in collaboration with Pakistan at all levels.
In the recent Afghan crisis, the neighboring country Pakistan saw the highest numbers of Afghanistan’s refugees and asylum seekers. Pakistan hosts 1,435,445 registered Afghan refugees, making it the third-largest host country of refugees in the world.
