The Russian Embassy in Washington has fired back at the U.S State Department saying that the department should focus on human rights abuses in its own country, rather than in Russia.

Taking to Twitter, the diplomatic mission said, “”State Department spokesman [Ned Price] keeps criticizing Russia for assumed human rights violations. Meanwhile, it is high time the US drew its attention to the internal situation.”

The embassy attached a link with the tweet that led to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website, where a report on human rights situations in over 40 countries was available. The report mentions the United States extensively.

The report reads, “…criticism about the real human rights situation in the country is still ignored by the authorities. Instead, Washington is looking for ‘violations’ anywhere but at home.”

This response comes after statements from the U.S on the arrest of the Kremlin’s most vocal critic, Alexei Navalny.

On Wednesday, Ned Price said at a regular press briefing that the US authorities are closely following developments regarding the new charges against Navalny. According to him, “this is just a continuation of a very disturbing pattern.”

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry claimed that the campaign around the situation with Navalny in the media is aimed exclusively at destabilizing the internal politics of the country.
