Republicans revolt, vow to back impeachment of Trump
There seems revolt in the Republicans as some of the lawmakers have joined the Democrats in removing President Donald Trump for inciting violence last week.
The impeachment move by the Democrats is gaining momentum when one of the senior Republicans, Liz Cheney, said she would vote against Trump.
The House plans to vote on Wednesday to remove Trump, which would make him the first US president ever to be impeached twice.
Ms Cheney, the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney said in a statement: “There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.”
The Wyoming representative added that Trump had “summoned this mob, assembled the mob, lit the flame of this attack”.
Meanwhile, John Katko and Adam Kinzinger said they would also vote for the rmoval of Trump.
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy, a Trump ally who was against his impeachment, has reportedly decided not to stop fellow party men from voting against the move.
And there are reports that senator are also turning on Trump. Republican leader Mitch McConnell has reportedly said he is pleased Democrats want to impeach Trump because he believes it will help rid the Republican party of him.
McConnell has also said he believes the president committed impeachable offences.
On Tuesday evening, House Republican Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania introduced a resolution to censure Trump — a congressional rebuke less severe than impeachment.
Trump will leave office on January 20 when Joe Biden will be sworn in as president.
