The holy month of Ramzan started in Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East on Tuesday after authorities announced the sighting of the moon on Monday.

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al Sudais, head of the Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques — Makkah’s and Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) mosques — said the Taraweeh prayers would be shortened from 20 to 10 raka’ts amid coronavirus.

The United Arab Emirate (UAE) moon-sighting committee also announced beginning of Ramzan 1442 Hijri on Tuesday.

Abu Dhabi Judicial Department officials held a virtual meeting after prayers on Monday and the committee was chaired by Sultan Saeed Al Badi Al Dhaheri, Minister of Justice.

In Pakistan, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet on Tuesday in Peshawar.

Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad will preside over the committee meeting. He told media that the committee had also extended an invitation to Mufti Popalzai to attend the meeting.

This will be the first meeting under Maulana Azad who was appointed chairman of the committee in December last, replacing Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman.

Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal committees will also meet on Tuesday at their respective headquarters.
