Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate Syed Ameer Ali Shah has defeated by a wide margin former Sindh chief minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim in the by-election to provincial assembly seat PS-52 Umerkot-II.

According to unofficial results, Syed Ameer Ali polled 55,904 votes. Arbab Ghulam Rahim of the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) got 30,921 votes.

Twelve candidates contested the by-elections. The PS-52 seat fell vacant after the death of former provincial minister Ali Mardan Shah.

The Election Commission had set up 128 polling stations and 423 polling booths for the by-election. There are 153,000 registered voters in the constituency.

Meanwhile, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari congratulated Syed Ameer Ali on winning the by-election.
