Lahore police have arrested a man for raping a 15-year-old girl in Manawan locality of the city.

The father of the rape survivor said that the girl had been raped by the suspect named Yasir multiple times over the period of 15 months. He said Yasir lived in the neighbourhood.

According to police, the suspect belongs to Sadiqabad and a case was registered against him under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code at Manawan police station.

Cantt SP Saad Aziz said that DNA samples of the suspect have been taken, adding that a medical examination of the survivor will be conducted as well.

In Dec 2020, President Arif Alvi approved the government’s Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Ordinance, 2020 to help expedite cases of sexual abuse against women and children.

A statement issued by the President House said that under this ordinance, special courts are to be set up across the country to expedite trials and cases of rape at the earliest. The courts would have to wrap up the cases within four months, the statement added.

Moreover, the ordinance maintains that PM Imran Khan is to oversee the establishment of anti-rape crisis cells authorised to conduct medico-legal examinations within six hours of the incident.

The ordinance also includes setting up a sex offenders’ registry at the national level with the help of the National Database & Registration Authority (NADRA). It also prohibits the identification of rape victims and makes it a punishable offence.
