Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, slammed the EU for investing in politics and showing no interest in the humantarian crisis of Afghanistan.

This comment came at a press conference with the Hungarian Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell. Josep Burell criticised the Russian foreign policy. Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, numerous countries have welcomed diplomatic negotiations. Especially Russia and China, who have swooped down on Afghanistan to fill the political vacuum.

Josep Borrell recently expressed his fear stating “what we cannot do is let the Chinese and Russians take control of the situation and be supporters of Kabul, and we become irrelevant.”

The comments came as a group of senior EU parliamentarians co-signed a statement declaring that they “deeply deplore the recent political, military, and moral calamity in Afghanistan.” According to them, the bloc must now urgently develop a new strategy to maintain political dominance in the region.

Lavrov chastised Borrell’s focus on the politics of the situation. As the Head of the EU foreign policy, encouraging such a philosophy was against the principles of Human Rights. He added that the focus should have been on helping the Afghans.

“And as for this mentality that Afghanistan cannot be allowed to fall to Russia and China,” Moscow’s top envoy said, “it comes from the same place as forcing people to choose whether they are with the West or with Russia and China. It is sad if these are the people developing policy for the EU.”

Russia has hosted Taliban representatives in the hoped of a peace deal. Despite having designated the Taliban as a terrorist organization. Whereas in Kabul, the Taliban have provided the Russian embassy with security. Unlike the American and British embassies which were shut down.
