A British man has been arrested in Germany on accusations of spying for Russia.
A thorough statement detailing the facts of the case was released by German federal prosecutors. It says that the 57-year old suspect, only named as David S, worked as a local employee at the British Embassy in Berlin, and “forwarded documents obtained in the course of his professional activities to a representative of a Russian intelligence service” for an “unknown amount” of money.
The accused was arrested in Potsdam outside Berlin, and his home and workplace are being searched.
The London Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest on their website and mentioned that it is the result of a joint investigation between the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command and German counterparts.
They also confirmed that “primacy for the investigation remains with German authorities”, however officers from the Counter Terrorism Command continue to communicate with German counterparts as the investigation continues.
The accused is set to be brought before the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice. The judge is expected to decide on the execution of the pre-trial detention.
