The Islamia University, Bahawalpur, has installed solar cells and started generating 2.5MW (megawatt) electricity to fulfill its demand for power.

According to Vice Chancellor Dr Athar Mehboob, the project was completed in one year at a cost of Rs304 million.

The Punjab government’s energy department provided financial and technical support for the project, he added.

The university will save more than Rs6 million per month as cost of electricity.

There is a possibility to take forward this project to 10MW in the future, he added.

Load shedding is a major problem, especially in the Punjab, and the university hopes solar energy will help end outages.
