Hezb-e-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar warned of possible negative consequences of peace talks without the presence of government representatives and other factions in the Doha talks. The outcome of these talks will be the continuation of the war in the country, he said.

Speaking on the anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan on Friday, Mr Hekmatyar said that NATO had been defeated in Afghanistan and that the war was still going on forty years later.

“Without the presence of the Kabul government and the other factions involved in the issue, if no serious measures are taken, the consequences of the Doha agreement, similar to the Geneva agreement, could lead to the continuation of the war,” he added.

The Hezb-e-Islami leader said that the government and security forces had failed to secure Kabul and that people should be allowed to carry weapons to ensure their own security: “The government could not provide security with mercenaries; We do this voluntarily.”

“The government should provide security for government facilities, offices, palaces, banks, airports and roads, and leave the security of the constituencies to the people of these constituencies.”
