Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, chief of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines will be supplied to poor nations by February.

This development comes after COVAX reached a deal with Pfizer-BioNTech for the provision of up to 40 million vaccines for underdeveloped countries. Earlier this week, Tedros condemned drug makers for prioritizing profits from the pandemic and thus catering to wealthy nations.

“Today, we are proud to have this opportunity to provide doses that will support COVAX efforts toward vaccinating healthcare workers at high risk of exposure in developing countries and other vulnerable … populations,” Pfizer Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla said.

At the virtual Geneva conference, Bourla stated that the initial dispatch would be based on non-profit, adding that developing countries should have “the same access to vaccines as the rest of the world.”

“We still have a lot of work to do,” said WHO head Tedros, “but the light at the end of the tunnel continues to grow brighter.”
