Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar, a central leader of the Pakistan People Party (PPP) from the Gujrat district passed away this morning. Omar Ayub Khan, the Federal Minister for Power, informed the public via Twitter.

“Deeply saddened to hear about the sad demise of Ch. Ahmed Mukhtar sahib, former Minister for Water & Power & Defense. May Allah grant the departed soul the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdos and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss. Ameen”.

Born in 1946, Mukhtar was a Pakistani politician and businessman who also served as the Defence Minister of Pakistan under the then Prime Minister, Yousaf Raza Gillani’s cabinet. He was also appointed Commerce Minister during Benzair Bhutto’s government and in 2008, was considered most likely to become the next Prime Minister of the country before being overtaken by Gillani.

Ahmad Mukhtar was the owner of Servis Group of Industries and belonged to a Jat family in Gujrat.
