The International Cricket Council (ICC) has started an investigation regarding an alleged attempt to fix games in the first Lanka Premier League (LPL) T20, which is due to start today.

The ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is seriously looking into this matter after newspapers in Sri Lanka reported some approaches made by a former Sri Lankan cricketer to a player participating in the LPL.

“The former national player who allegedly made the approach is currently overseas,” the newspaper report says. This player, the report further noted, was previously accused of wrong-doings but got later cleared of match-fixing charges by the ICC.

With this development, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC), government and ACU will be working closely during the whole tournament. The involved authorities are not sharing any details regarding the investigations.

To curb corruption in sports, Sri Lankan government took stringent measures in 2019 and declared this a criminalised offence.

Since then, there have also been anti-corruption programmes conducted for players and officials by SLC and ICC. A 24-hour hotline had also been set-up to report any corrupt activity.
