As Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin was unveiling budget for financial year 2021-22, government employees and pensioners protested and staged a sit in at the main gate of Parliament House on Friday.

Oblivious of the fact that the cabinet has already approved a 10 percent raise in salaries and pension, the employees of different government departments gathered outside the parliament on the Constitution Avenue for pay raise.

They said the wages had not been increased for the past three years.

When told by some journalists that the government has approved 10 percent hike in wages, they rejected it immediately and demanded substantial increase. They vowed to continue protest till their demand was met.

The protesters also demanded that contract employees be regularised.

The road leading to the parliament was blocked with barbed wire, but it proved unsuccessful to deter the protesters, who jumped over it.

Despite hot weather, a large number of people gathered to protest.
