The Pentagon on Thursday confirmed an explosion near Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, where Western forces are rushing to evacuate as many people as possible out of the country.

US and allied officials have said they had reports that suicide bombers were threatening to attack the airport.

“We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport. Casualties are unclear at this time. We will provide additional details when we can,” said Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby.

Earlier today, the western countries had warned their nationals in kabul to steer clear of the airport. A US issues notification stated “Those at the Abbey Gate, East Gate, or North Gate now should leave immediately,”.

Australia’s department of foreign affairs said there was an “ongoing and very high threat of terrorist attack”. “Do not travel to Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport. If you’re in the area of the airport, move to a safe location and await further advice.”

London issued a similar warning, adding “if you can leave Afghanistan safely by other means, you should do so immediately”.

In the last 24 hours, Western forces evacuated 13,400 people out of Kabul on 91 military cargo aircraft flights. Since the mass evacuations began on Aug. 14, approximately 95,700 people have been airlifted out of Afghanistan.

About 101,300 people have been evacuated since the end of July, including about 4,500 U.S. citizens and their families.

This is a developing story, details might be updated.
