Napoli – the Serie A leaders – suffered their first defeat of the season as Inter got better of them with a 1-0 victory while the defending champions AC Milan and Juventus also won their matches.

Inter against Napoli on their home turf – the giant San Siro with a capacity of around 80,000 – was the biggest clash of Match Day 16 – the first after the World Cup break.

It was Eden Dzeko scored the only goal of the game in the 56th minute when he beat Alex Meret with a header with Federico Di Marco providing the assist.

Napoli, who was just running away with the race to the top prize before this match, still top the table with 41 points after 16 games, with a five-point lead over AC Milan while Inter have now pushed them into the top four teams after this win with 33 points.

In the first match of the day, AC Milan resumed their Serie A campaign with a 2-1 win at Salernitana, this narrowing the gap to Napoli to five points.

Portugal international Rafael Leao opened the scoring after 10 minutes after rounding Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Sandro Tonali, who set up the opener, then drove home from inside the box to extend the lead with his second goal of the season.

Salernitana’s Federico Bonazzoli capitalised on Lassana Coulibaly’s deep cross for a consolation goal late on.

However, it wasn’t an easy outing for Juventus against Cremonese, who managed to the get the winner in the 91st minute against a much-weaker opponent through Arkadiusz Milik. However, they have now moved up to the third spot on the table with 34 points.

In other matches, Roma defeated Bologna 1-0 while Lazio experienced a surprise 2-1 defeat at the hands of Lecce. The two sides from Rome have 30 points each but Lazio occupies the fifth spot due to their 1-0 victory against Roma on Nov 6.
