Chief Selector Muhammad Wasim on Friday backed Azam’s Khan selection for the upcoming series against England and West Indies. His selection was always going to be a controversial one as he is the son of Pakistan’s former wicketkeeper-batsman Moin Khan.

Chief selector, Mohammad Wasim during his press conference said that we have observed an improvement in Azam Khan’s fitness that’s why we added him to the squad.

Wasim said that fitness was the main criteria for selection but we also need to keep in mind the balance and composition of the team.

Speaking about Imad Wasim’s selection, Wasim said that he had performed well recently. “It is possible that the T20I World Cup takes place in the UAE, which is why he has been selected, keeping in mind the tournaments to come,” he added.

The chief selector said the decision to select the squads at this time was taken keeping in mind logistical reasons. “Ideally, we would have wanted to announce the names after the PSL.”

He further adding that those who will well in the PSL 6 remaining matches will be considered for future series as well.

In response to a question, Waseem said the management had decided to make a few changes to the squad every now and then but had decided to retain the same core team till the World Cup. He further reiterated that cricketers who are performing in the domestic tournament will be given importance as well.

The side will play three ODIs and as many T20Is in England from 8-20 July. After that, they will take on current T20 champions West Indies in five T20Is that will be followed by two Tests.
