The 11-party opposition alliance, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) on Monday nominated Yousaf Raza Gilani as its joint candidate for the office of Senate chairman.

According to sources, a meeting of the PDM chaired by Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman unanimously decided to nominate Yousaf Raza Gilani as its candidate.

The PPP had proposed Yousaf Raza Gilani as its candidate for the chairmanship of the Senate and the Awami National Party supported his candidature. No one has been named for the deputy chairman of the Senate.

Yousaf Raza Gilani was the joint opposition candidate from Islamabad in the Senate elections and defeated PTI candidate Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh.

The newly elected senators will be sworn in on March 12, after which the chairman and deputy chairman of the house will be elected.

The government has nominated sitting chairman Sadiq Sanjarani as its candidate.
