Earlier this morning, Asad Umar, Chairman of the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) cautioned the people of Pakistan against another potential wave of coronavirus that could endanger ‘both lives and livelihoods’. He said Pakistan saw a 140% increase in the daily coronavirus mortality rate in comparison to weeks ago. Mr. Umar believes this is a direct consequence of Pakistan ‘recklessly ignoring all SOP’s’.

‘Last week daily covid mortality was 12. This is a 140% increase vs few weeks back. We are collectively committing a blunder by recklessly ignoring all sop’s and the results have started to show. If we do not change our current path we will lose both lives and livelihoods’, he tweeted.

On Monday, Imran Khan, in an address to participants at the Clean Green Index Award Ceremony, also warned against a revival of Coronavirus.

“I fear there might be another spike of coronavirus in cities where the rate of pollution increases in October and November,” he said.

“I fear that in these two months — October and November cities like Faisalabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Gujranwala where there is more pollution there might be a second spike in coronavirus cases. The cases are rising gradually and we hope that they don’t increase quickly; we are monitoring it,” the Prime Minister added.

Last week, Asad Umer reported that the country’s Coronavirus positivity rate was at 2.37 per cent, the highest in over 50 days, after a recent spike in the number of new cases.

Although Pakistan has been internationally lauded for its efforts against the virus, its citizens must not adopt complacency and should, instead, strictly adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), believes Imran Khan.

“Pakistan not only saved its people, but we also saved the economy,” he said.

So far, Pakistan has reported a total of 323,452 confirmed coronavirus cases and 6,659 deaths.
