The United States has extended an invitation to Pakistan to attend the virtual Climate Summit on April 22 and 23.

John Kerry, President Joe Biden’s climate envoy, wrote a letter to Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam inviting him to the summit.

“On behalf of the President of the United States, it is my pleasure to invite you to be a distinguished speaker at the virtual Summit on Climate. We would like to ask you to join other Ministers and leaders on April 22 in a discussion focused on climate adaptation and resilience,” Kerry wrote.

President Biden will host a closely watched global leaders climate summit, during which the US is expected to unveil an updated carbon emission reduction target and urge cooperation with other nations to combat the climate crisis.

The president had invited 40 heads of state and government but ignored Pakistan, an important country in the South Asian region.

“It is our hope you can contribute Pakistan’s valuable perspective to a session focused on climate adaptation and resilience, to be hosted by Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. The full Summit, including this session, will be live-streamed for public viewing. My team will follow up shortly with further details,” wrote Kerry.

“President Biden and I very much hope you are able to participate in this timely gathering,” Kerry concluded.
