ISLAMABAD: Access to social media services in the country has been restored after popular websites were suspended on Friday on the order of the Interior Ministry. Services were fully restored around 4pm.

In a letter sent to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the interior ministry had asked for “immediate action” to be taken.

A reason for the suspension was not cited by the government, however, the suspension comes in the aftermath of country-wide violent protests by Tehreek-e-Labaik (TLP). The protest erupted after the party’s chief was arrested earlier this week.

The government has moved already to ban the party by approaching the apex court. Earlier, the federal cabinet had outlawed the group under the country’s anti-terrorism law.
