The funeral prayers of Begum Shamin Akhtar, the mother of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Muslim League (PML)-N head Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and former Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, will be held Saturday at the Sharif Medical City, Raiwind. The burial ceremony will be held thereafter.

PML-N information secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed this information in a statement on Wednesday.

Begum Shamim Akhar passed away on 22nd November in London at the age of 89. She was suffering from chronic ill health and an advanced stage of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Funeral prayers for her were first observed in London Central Mosque, London. The prayers were attended by Nawaz Sharif alongside small crowd of under 30, under COVID-19 guidelines.

Footage of the funeral prayers was shared on social media by journalist Murtaza Ali Shah.

On Tuesday, the Punjab government approved a five-day parole from jail for Shahbaz Sharif and son Hamza Shahbaz so they may attend the funeral and burial ceremony of their mother and grandmother, respectively. Both are currently serving a sentence on charges of money laundering. The parole will come into effect as soon as Begum Shamim’s body arrives in Pakistan.
