Exercising his powers, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday approved Lt-Gen Faiz Hamid’s application for early retirement after the defence ministry forwarded the document to his office.

The application was initially submitted by the former ISI chief to the GHQ which sent the same to the ministry according to the procedural requirements.

Now retired, Faiz served as the DG ISI and corps commander Peshawar during the PTI government. He was later posted as Bahawalpur corps commander.

He had opted to seek early retirement a day before the change in command at the army’s General Headquarters (GHQ).

The authorities had accepted his resignation ahead of the new postings, albeit there was no official confirmation from Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) regarding the development.

Lt-Gen (r) Faiz, due to retire in April next year, was among the six senior-most generals whose name was included by GHQ in the list of potential candidates for the two top military offices, sent to the prime minister for approval.

He had been a target of criticism from PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz for allegedly having a role in their convictions and for backing the previous set-up under PTI.
