The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has banned all electronic coverage of the recently proscribed religious party, Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). On April 15, the authority issued a notification declaring that it “prohibits media coverage to proscribed organisations”.

“All satellite TV channels and FM Radios licensees are hereby required to restrain from providing any kind of media coverage to this (banned) organisation,” PEMRA’s notification read.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Imran Khan approved a summary seeking a ban on the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan in the wake of violent protests by the radical party.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed had said that the party was being banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act at the request of the Punjab government. He further revealed that two policemen were killed and nearly 340 injured in the violence “and the law is following those who blocked roads through social media and gave the message of unrest”.

The statement came after law enforcement agencies and officials cleared TLP activists from roads in different cities of the country as protests entered the third day.
