Prime Minister Imran Khan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the importance of a negotiated political settlement of the conflict in Afghanistan ahead of the recently announced planned US withdrawal.

In a telephone call from the Turkish president, the two leaders agreed that a continual momentum of high-level exchanges was crucial to transform bilateral relations into strategic economic partnerships.

The leaders also discussed issues of mutual interest, emphasising on strengthening bilateral relations in all areas.

Imran Khan discussed Pakistan’s stance on the US-Taliban deal, stating that the country had fully supported and facilitated the peace agreement and the subsequent initiation of the intra-Afghan negotiations.

The premier also stated that the negotiations provided a historic opportunity which “must be seized” by the Afghan leadership to achieve an “inclusive, broad-based and comprehensive” political settlement.

Appreciating Turkey’s role, Imraan Khan added that Pakistan would continue to extend all possible support to the efforts for a political solution for durable peace and stability in Afghanistan.
