Pakistan has recorded a nationwide shortage of water in dams and reservoirs, posing an imminent threat to crops like rice, sugar cane, and maize among others. The country could potentially witness a shortage of 30 to 35%, with greater dependency on rainfall and melting glaciers.

The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) is to convene a meeting on March 25, 2021, regarding the country’s water crisis.

Pakistan’s Indus River System Authority was established in 1993, serving as the country’s water regulator. The authority was established for regulating and monitoring the distribution of water sources of the Indus River system among the provinces, in accordance with provisions of the water accord, as per the Ministry of Water Resources. It oversees water allocation based on seasonally available supplies, with Rao Irshad Ali Khan serving as the current Chairman.
