ISLAMABAD: On Friday, legislators of the opposition benches staged a walk out from the National Assembly session, as they accused the chair of not running the proceedings in an appropriate manner.

Senior PPP leader Naveed Qamar said the opposition could not become part of the house because it was being run in an inappropriate manner.

The opposition left the house after Naveed Qamar protested that the house was not properly representing the people of the country. “Therefore, we are staging the walk out,” the PPP leader said.

The opposition’s walkout led to the session being adjourned by the NA speaker Asad Qaisar, as the PTI and its government coalition allies also had low attendance. Hence the house lacked the proper quorum required to continue proceedings.

The next session will take place on Monday.

It was the third consecutive session of the lower house which had to be adjourned because of lack of quorum and the opposition’s walkout.

On Tuesday the house also failed to debate or legislate anything after the opposition’s previous walkout. The move came after NA speaker had denier permission to opposition members to speak on the current political climate in the country. The opposition staged a noisy protest within the house. The opposition members kept on hurling papers at the speaker’s dais, raised slogans against the government and surrounded Mr Suri almost throughout the proceedings.

The manner in which the opposition was protesting and surrounding the speaker’s dais was against parliamentary norms, said Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan, after the opposition’s walkout on Friday. He said the opposition did not participate in all the meetings called by the speaker and this attitude of the opposition was also unconstitutional.
