Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said the opposition is opposing open ballot because they are afraid of defeat in the Senate elections.

In a statement, he said that the opposition had been demanding open voting for Senate elections in the past but now they are opposing it for point scoring.

He criticised the opposition for contradictory approach to the Charter of Democracy.

Foreign Minister Qureshi said that the government will respect the direction of the Supreme Court on the Senate elections.

He said that the government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court because it had two options; either to seek guidance or amend the constitution for which it hasn’t two-thirds majority in the parliament.

He claimed that the government has invited the opposition for dialogue and has provided a chance to them which they had already committed under Charter of Democracy.

He claimed that the opposition alliance PDM is working on one point agenda that aimed at avoiding cases and seeking an NRO.

Foreign Minister Qureshi advised the PDM to show political maturity and avoid indulging in negative politics and targeting national institutions.

About the armed forces, he said that they are protecting the motherland from outside aggression and the politicians should not politicise their role.

He paid tributes to the martyrs in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and said that the government of Pakistan is highlighting the atrocities of Indian fascist regime against innocent Kashmiris at all forums and continue its support to the oppressed Kashmiris.
