A car accident on Monday night in Islamabad, when a vehicle carrying the family of Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment of Women Kashmala Tariq collided with a car, resulted in the deaths of four young men, while one was injured. A first investigation report (FIR) was lodged against the ombudsperson’s son, Azlan Khan. However, Khan obtained a bail before arrest, while a driver was arrested in relation to the case.

Kashmala Tariq’s son appeared before the court of Additional Sessions Judge Mohammad Sohail, where he was granted bail before arrest till February 16, against surety bonds of Rs 50,000.

Speaking at a press briefing in Islamabad on Tuesday, Kashmala Tariq said that her son was being subjected to “baseless allegations” regarding his involvement in the accident, and the vehicle, a Lexus, that hit the car was driven by a driver. Kashmala and her husband were in the Lexus, she claimed, while their son was in another car.

She demanded that the footage of the incident be released by the Safe City Project so her son’s innocence can be proven.

“The accident was a result of the negligence of the drivers of both vehicles, but the media started conducting a trial of my family,” she said.

She also expressed her grief at the loss of lives incurred, and said she did not have words to console the mothers of the deceased.
