A military C130, having heat vision cameras, will take part in the search and rescue operation of mountaineers Ali Sadpra, John Snorri and JP Mohr who went missing on Friday while on the first-ever expedition to conquer K2 in winter.

The plane is on standby and will take off from Skardu airbase as soon as the weather clearance is received.

The C130 plane is equipped with high definition cameras to take photographs of the area. It can fly above the K2 peak as well.

Earlier, helicopters had been doing aerial reconnaissance, but they can fly up to a maximum altitude of 7,500 meters.

The mountaineers’ last known and tracked location was above 6,400 meters. Sadpara was said to be at around 8,000 meters near the bottleneck of K2 when lost contact.

Ali Sadpara’s son Sajid, who returned just before the bottleneck, was also part of the search and rescue operation.
