Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Monday said PTI Chairman Imran Khan was instigating the institution (military) to take unconstitutional steps, as he blasted the former prime minister for his politics.
He said the same institution had played a role [in politics] in the past but currently it wanted to play the constitutional role and there shouldn’t be any hurdles for achieving the goal.
The Ministry of Defence had received the letter from the Prime Minister’s Office about the appointment of new army chief and the process would be completed in the next two to three days, he informed the House and remarked that they would deal with Imran after that.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Khawaja Asif said the same institutions being currently criticised Imran had extended unconditional support to him for four years, adding that he should not target them for his complete failure during the government tenure.
Imran was using unconstitutional tactics for political gains and lost his mind, said the defence minister who discussed a range of issues concerning the political history of Pakistan.
He said the establishment had ruled the country directly for around 35 years and managed the government affairs indirectly during the remaining period. The whole process responsible for the current state of affairs, remarked and added that the history of judiciary was also not laudable.
All the institutions would have to be on the same page and that page was of constitution, said Khawaja Asif and stressed the need for shunning the practice of following personal interests.
However, he was critical of media for reporting that the summary for new army chief had been received and said news items were being spread without being verification.
