Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz on Tuesday recommended two names for appointment as caretaken chief minister of the province.
According to a letter posted on Twitter Hamza named Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and Ahad Khan Cheema as the PML-N candidates for the office.
SHEHBAZ CONSULTS PDM LEADERSHIP: Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held consultations with top leaders of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) on caretaker Punjab chief minister.
Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman has already written separate letters to Chief Minister Parvez Elahi and outgoing opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz to mutually decide on a candidate for the appointment as caretaker CM within three days.
Both have till Tuesday evening to discuss and decide on a name.
According to a statement issued by the PM Office on Tuesday, PM Shehbaz telephoned former president Asif Ali Zardari, PML-Q chief Shujaat Hussain and PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
“The Prime Minister held consultation with the three leaders on the name of caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab,” the statement added.
PM Shehbzad also discussed political situation of the country with the leaders of the allied parties.
A day earlier, PM Shehbaz and senior party members held a meeting to finalise candidates for the post of caretaker Punjab chief minister.
PML-N’s top brass met under party supremo Nawaz Sharif, who participated via video link from London, at the prime minister’s Model Town residence in Lahore.
The meeting reached the decision to participate in the consultation process for the appointment of the caretaker chief minister and hammer out the party’s strategy, insiders said and added that various names for the slot came under discussion during the meeting.
However, the party has decided to keep the shortlisted names under wraps until the allies are consulted.
PTI, PML-Q CANDIATES: The two allies – PTI and PML-Q – revealed three names for the caretaker chief minister of the Punjab.
On Sunday, the outgoing chief minister, Parvez Elahi, told media after a meeting with PTI Chairman Imran Khan in Lahore that Cabinet Secretary Ahmad Nawaz Sukhera, former health minister Naseer Khan and ex-chief secretary Nasir Saeed Khosa were their nominees for the slot.
Later, Parvez, is serving as Punjab’s chief minister until the name for the caretaker CM is finalised, said in a tweet, “We are sending these names to the [Punjab] governor and if the opposition thinks broadly, the agreement upon the suggested names seems likely.”
Now, these names will be discussed with Hamza Shehbaz, the opposition leader in the erstwhile Punjab Assembly, for the appointment of a caretaker chief minister in the province.
The inclusion of Sukhera in the panel has surprised many since he is still in service and has a couple of weeks to go till his retirement. He had earlier featured in the panel of candidates for the selection of Punjab chief secretary, but he withdrew his name on the plea that he would be retiring soon.
On the other hand, Naseer belongs to Narowal and has served as the federal health minister as well as a former WHO head (health). Khosa is a former bureaucrat and has served as the Punjab chief secretary.
