PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari met PML-Q Chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Thursday night in a bid to woo him to support PML-N’s candidate Hamza Shehbaz for Punjab chief minister.
The political temperature in Punjab continued to mount as the clock ticks on the crucial Punjab assembly session for the chief minister’s election, taking place this afternoon.
A crucial session of the Punjab Assembly will be held at 4 pm today (Friday) to elect the chief minister. The clear victory of the PTI in the Punjab by-polls had turned around the number game in the Punjab Assembly, with Pervaiz Elahi now most likely to replace Hamza Shehbaz as the new chief minister of the province.
Despite two earlier meetings with Chaudhry Shujaat, former president Zardari last night again visited Zahoor palace. Insiders said that Zardari had sent a message for a meeting to Pervaiz Elahi and his son Moonis Elahi. However, they refused to meet him.
Insiders said that Pervaiz Elahi had made it clear that he was Imran Khan’s candidate for the office of chief minister.
ZARADRI CONTACTS NAWAZ: Meanwhile, insiders also revealed that former president Zardari had contacted former prime minister and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and discussed the current political situation ahead of the chief minister’s election.
Interestingly, Zardari had suggested to Nawaz in a telephonic conversation to name Pervaiz Elahi a joint candidate of the PML-N and the PML-Q for the office of chief minister.
However, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah dispelled the news reports, saying that Pervaiz would not be the joint candidate.
“It is just a rumour, there is no truth in the news. Hamza is the only candidate of the PML-N and coalition partners, and we are all hopeful of his success,” Sanaullah said.
