Pakistan’s first Miss Trans is creating ripples all across the world. Shyraa Roy is a transgender woman from Pakistan, who is not just a model but a singer, actor and producer as well.
Born into a family from Sialkot, Roy faced many problems when she came out to her family and the world. She was criticised over social media and trolled down. Shyraa started her career from Bollywood. She has played various roles in Bollywood movies like Mohini in Mohenjodaro and Natasha in Saaho. She sang in music singles like “Raat, Kamli” in 2020 with Pakistani singer Mohsin Abbas Haider. Roy broke the stereotypes by giving the music release through ARY Films. She also played a lead role in Pakistani movie ‘Aks’ with Meera Jee which is yet to be released.
She also turned producer as well as screenwriter with Hello Shabnam for Amazon Prime. Roy struggled her way up in the industry and is a student of Anwar Rafi who has been ruling the music industry of Pakistan for years. Roy created a new trend in Pakistan by her music video release in cinema of DHA Lahore called Duniya where media praised her by doing a big premiere just like any full length movie theatrical release.
The model was criminalised by her own community, where she was threatened, scolded, scammed and tortured. This was all because there exists a mafia even in the trans world that cannot see someone achieve any milestones. Roy got a chance to flee the country but stayed strong because of her inner faith. She struggled while being all alone and suffering from poverty before her life changed. On 25 May 2021, Roy was crowned Miss Trans Pakistan. This pageant was an extension to Miss Pakistan World. The extension is credited to Shyraa as it was specifically originated to empower her gender. She made history as the first trans woman to be crowned. By winning this huge title, she proved her community and everyone else wrong.
After winning the title, Roy feels now it is her responsibility to be a role model for others in her community. Success never comes easy, it is achieved by hard work and struggle. And this is shown by Shyraa in her life’s work so far. She didn’t make it overnight, but work her way through all the hardships that came her way. From transitioning to grooming herself, she did it herself as our society lacks people who train trans women. Moving on, Shyraa wants to create a welcoming and accepting environment for people like her in the society.
She recently reminisced about her once-in-a-lifetime experience working with Bollywood megastar Hrithik Roshan in talk show.
Roy stated: “I didn’t know that the movie was with Hrithik Roshan, I was in the University when I got a call for a cameo role in a film, I thought that I will be having a good stipend money and it will be a memorable experience too.”
“So I said ‘yes’ to it, when I first saw Hrithik, I was shivering, he had to come into the car and had to drive it too fast and I had to act scared, as per the script, in that whole scene, I was in shock and awe of him, it was a huge moment, I was nervous because it was an unbelievable experience. I just said Hello to him and we picturized the scene,” she concluded.
Bollywood film ‘Mohenjodaro’ was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and starred Hrithik Roshan, Pooja Hegde, Kabir Bedi and Arunoday Singh in lead roles. It was released in August 2016.
