Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Bilal Yaseen was shot and injured by unidentified assailants in Lahore on Friday, police said.

According to police, the armed men on two motorcycles opened fire on Bilal after he visited a party worker in the Data Darbar area of the city.

The MPA suffered two bullet injuries in his leg and stomach, a police official said, adding that he was rushed to the Mayo Hospital.

According to Dr. Fayyaz of Mayo Hospital, Bilal has been transferred to ICU after a successful operation.

Bilal is in good health. The bone under his hip was broken by a bullet which was surgically removed. However, it may take 6-9 months for the wound to heal completely, said the doctor.

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has taken notice of the incident and directed police to submit a report at the earliest.

Meanwhile, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz said in a tweet that the party leader, according to doctors, is out of danger despite suffering critical wounds.

“May Allah grant him speedy and complete recovery,” she added.

PML-N President and Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack on Bilal Yaseen and termed the incident an “act of terrorism”.

He also demanded the authorities to arrest the culprits immediately and punished them as per the law.

According to his profile on Punjab Assembly’s official website, Bilal was re-elected as member of the provincial legislator for the third time in 2018 general elections from PP-150 constituency (Lahore-VII).

He has served as provincial minister for food during PML-N’s 2013-18 tenure.

He was born on December 14, 1970, in Lahore and graduated in 1990 from University of the Punjab, Lahore.
