A man seen pacing outside the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan on Thursday holding an apparent shotgun to his neck has been taken into police custody.

The New York City police department confirmed that he is in custody and poses no threat.

Live news video showed the man surrendering to police outside the fence around the UN compound on Manhattan’s East Side.

The New York Police Department posted on Twitter, “The individual is now in custody and there is NO THREAT to the public”.

The UN complex was put on lockdown for the time being on Thursday as police responded to the incident. The man paced back and forth by the fence and left several notebooks on the sidewalk before turning himself in. The notebooks were taken by police in heavy armor.

Police attempted to establish a dialogue with the man, while traffic was diverted from the area. The man appeared to be in his 60s, an NYPD spokesman said.

The UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric spoke to the media and said, “We have absolutely zero indication that this person is a staff member or former staff member or in any way linked to the UN.

Dujarric said an initial full lockdown was partially relaxed by early afternoon with the reopening of a separate entrance.
