Justice (retired) Maqbool Baqar is on top of the candidates’ list that the government is considering for the position of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman, it is learnt on Saturday.
Insiders said that the name of Justice Baqar was pondered during the meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PPP co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, while all the coalition government partners have also agreed that he was the most suitable candidate for the position.
In addition, opposition leader Raja Riaz has no objection to Justice Baqar’s appointment.
If there are no impediments, coalition parties have stated that Justice Baqar will be appointed as the next NAB chairman, insiders added.
Justice Baqar had been promoted from the Sindh High Court to the Supreme Court and retired on April 4, 2022.
The judicial record of Justice Baqar is immaculate.
A senior government official said that the name of Justice Baqar was being considered along with Justice (retd) Dost Muhammad Khan.
A lawyer who is part of the former ruling PTI said Justice Baqar has a “very good reputation and is the best candidate for the post.”
Previously, Justice Baqar was amongst those judges who gave a judgment in favour of Justice Qazi Faez Isa regarding undocumented assets.
PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry, on the other hand, told reporters outside the Islamabad High Court that a “puppet had been appointed as a dummy opposition leader,” adding that the nominations for the NAB chairman were being finalised.”
“Justice Baqar is a reasonable man, hopefully, he will not be a part of this process,” said Fawad.
