Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman said that local bodies’ elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa proved once again that his party is the single largest party of the province.

He made these remarks while addressing a press conference along with former Balochistan chief minister Aslam Raisani in Quetta on Monday.

“We can run the country better than them,” said the JUI-F chief.

“This election has proved that the previous elections were rigged and the JUI-F was and still is the largest party of the province,” he remarked.

Fazal said some forces did not want religious parties to come into power due to their ideology. “Why would we [JUI-F] be unacceptable to the Western world when the United States ‘allowed’ Taliban to take over Afghanistan?” he added.

“If the US and the West can reach a truce with the Afghan Taliban, why would they have a problem with us,” JUI-F chief asked.

“This kind of mentality should end,” he added.

The JUI-F chief thinks that the time has come to open the doors and let them move forward.

The Maulana said the elections results have vindicated their stance that corruption allegations had been used as a tool to victimise opposition parties.

“The practice to defame politicians should end now,” said Fazal, adding that his party could run the affairs of the state better than the ruling PTI.

Replying to a question, Fazal, who is also the head of the opposition alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), said preparations were under way for protests across the country.

He said he would soon visit Karachi where he would meet other opposition leaders to discuss the strategy for the rally planned for March 23.
