Dissident Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Raja Riaz Ahmad has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.
“Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf declares Raja Riaz Ahmad, MNA as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan under Rule 39 of the Rules of Procedures and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly,” read an official statement on Friday.
Raja Riaz had submitted the application for the Leader of the Opposition signed by 16 lawmakers whereas Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) MNA Ghous Bux Khan Mahar also submitted the application for the office signed by six members, the statement added.
A notification in this respect has also been issued.
On April 10, the PTI announced it was resigning from the National Assembly minutes before the scheduled election of the new prime minister, paving the way for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif to secure the coveted slot.
Last month, the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) forwarded the name of Hussain Elahi to the National Assembly speaker for the coveted post of opposition leader in the lower house.
In a letter written to the NA speaker, the PML-Q – the largest party on the opposition benches after the former ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) quit the assembly – asked the speaker to appoint Elahi as the opposition leader.
The letter to the speaker has been signed by PML-Q lawmakers Moonis Elahi, Farah Khan, and Hussain Elahi himself.
