The ban on public transport announced by the Punjab government came into effect on Monday, as the government issued a notification confirming restrictions on inter-city and intra-city transport for five days.

In the wake of soaring infections and the government calling the next few weeks “crucial”, the provinces and the Centre have tightened the anti-virus restrictions to curb the new cases.

According to the notification issued by Punjab, the ban on public transport will remain in place from 6:00 pm on May 10 till 6:00 am on May 15.

However, private vehicles, taxis/cabs and rickshaws will be allowed to operate with 50 per cent occupancy, a previous notification of the health department had said. It had also said there would be a complete ban on inter-city public transport except on weekends (Saturday & Sunday) with 50 per cent occupancy.

During the said, tourist spots will remain closed. Essential services, such as pharmacies, petrol stations, tandoors, dairy and meat shops, will be exempted from this ban, as per the order.

Meanwhile, the government has allowed restaurants to operate, but indoor and outdoor dining is banned. Only takeaway and deliveries are allowed. Police, Rangers, and army personnel will be deployed at the checkpoints at the entry and exit points of all cities in the province.
